I need to get my message out on Social Media.... but where do I start?

Imagine you were living in a village 200 years ago. Everyone in the village would go to the water pump in the middle of town and there, as humans have always done, they would exchange gossip that was going around the village. Now imagine that you were at the pump and you were 18 years old. Would you talk or gossip much with a 40 year old? Probably not. Social media today is the same. Different groups of people are using different platforms to gossip and share information. That is the first thing that you need to understand. Who, specifically, are you targeting and what platforms are those people using . Today, an 18 year old will most likely spend more time on Instagram than on Facebook. They will use a mixture of platforms with some used more than others. That is just how the world goes, and you need to take that into account. If you are spending your time Marketing on Facebook to 18 year olds... well you will not get your message out as you should.

The next thing that you need to work out

Is what you are trying to say. This is the part where some of our clients run out of steam. You have something to sell, but is it that you want to say about that product or service? You need to be mindful that these are Social platforms and are not necessarily seen as Sales platforms. So selling something on Social media is often dressed up as a casual conversation. The person who holds the account may just mention a product or have a post that leads the followers to do some more research on that product. And then they just casually mention that product again, a few weeks later. Just putting out a shingle and saying "Here it is, buy this stuff now!' is not going to cut it. It is far more subtle than that, but much more powerful as people have come to trust Social Media far more than they would with traditional media, as Social media responds to them directly as they interact with it.

By making a few strategic decisions before you start any campaign you can save a lot of time and effort in getting the result that you need. Once we have those goals set up, it is a matter of measuring and adjusting your strategy as you go along.
